Historically speaking, its existence can be traced back to the kingdoms of Viratnagar that flourished here around 1500 B.C. Mention of Alwar in history dates back to 1265 when Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq barged in this capital city of Mewat to banish the bandits of the region. As the newest Rajput kingdom, Alwar city was founded in 1720 by Rajput Pratap Singh, who hailed from Amber (Jaipur). It was also one of the first Rajput states to become ally of the British Empire.
